Historical fiction is the genre of the moment → entertainment.timesonline.co.uk

I am a huge historical fiction fan… okay, more like a regency romance novel fan… but either way, I’m going to lump myself in the more elite group of “historical fiction”.

“And fantasy it was, for we were not strong, only aggressive; we were not free, merely licensed; we were not compassionate, we were polite; not good, but well behaved. We courted death in order to cal ourselves brave, and hid like thieves from life. We substituted good grammar for intellect; we switched habits to simulate maturity; we rearranged lies and called it truth, seeing in the new pattern of an old idea the Revelation and the Word.” —

- The Bluest Eye, Toni Morrison

This paragraph is like a poem to me… it’s lyrical and poignant. I love these words so much.

“Love is never any better than the lover. Wicked people love wickedly, violent people love violently, weak people love weakly, stupid people love stupidly, but the love of a free man is never safe. There is not gift for the beloved. The lover alone possesses his gift of love. The loved one is shorn, neutralized, frozen in the glare of the lover’s inward eye.” — The Bluest Eye, Toni Morrison

5 Literary Hook-Ups I'd Like to See → huffingtonpost.com

This is the oddest literary article I’ve ever read. Who thinks about authors “hooking up”? That has never crossed my mind in the many years of reading and being the fan of numerous authors… I don’t think of authors as sexual or “sexy”… their stories or characters yes, but the authors themselves, uh, no. But then again, maybe it’s just me???

Okay, okay, I know the author is just making the point of combining different writing styles but that title was wholly misleading.

“I read somewhere that everybody on this planet is separated by only six other people. Six degrees of separation. Between us and everybody else on this planet. The president of the United States. A gondolier in Venice. fill in the names. I find that A] tremendously comforting that we’re so close and B] like Chinese water torture that we’re so close. Because you have to find the right six people to make the connection. It’s not just big names. It’s anyone. A native in a rain forest. A Tierra del Fuegan. An Eskimo. I am bound to everyone on this planet by a trail of six people. It’s a profound thought. How Paul found us. How to find the man whose son he pretends to be. Or perhaps is his son, although I doubt it. How every person is a new door, opening up into other worlds. Six degrees of separation between me and everyone else on this planet. But to find the right six people.” —Ouisa from the play Six Degrees of Separation
